for family excursions and hiking
From the mountains, you can see kilometres of the Spanish coastline and the northern coast of Africa. There are three rivers in Benahavis, all flowing into the Mediterranean Sea. These are the Guadalmedina, the Guadalmansa and the Guadaiza river. There are excellent opportunities for strolling, walking or hiking around the picturesque area of Benahavis.
Mountain and river trails to hike in Benahavis
Many beautiful river trails run through the natural landscapes of Benahavis, and many are suitable for all the family. The trails along the banks of the Guadalmina River are flat and easy to walk for hikers, big and small. One of the routes ends in Benahavís, at a viewpoint where you can see the wooden bridge that crosses the river. It is easy to walk and ideal for groups of mixed ages and abilities. It usually takes around two hours.
Another popular hiking trail for families is the dragonfly route. The route’s name is because you can see thousands of dragonflies there in summer.
The hiking route along the Angosturas del Río Guadalmina area is also popular. The hike is not very difficult, and there are many natural pools where you can splash around on hot summer days. The hike route starts at the Las Mozas puddle, which you can only get to by going into the water. Make sure your belongings are safe in waterproof containers or bags.
Montemayor castle route
The Montemayor castle hiking route is also an option if you hike without children. The hike is very tough, ascending the mountain to the Montemayor castle ruins that overlook the village and offer spectacular views of the entire coastal and inland region. You can also follow a trail, on foot or by mountain bike, to the thousand-year-old remnants of a Moorish fortress. Along the way, you will encounter fantastic scenery.
