Easter, or as called in Spain, The Holy Week, is a religious catholic celebration all over the country. The most well-known events are celebrated in Seville, Granada and Malaga. In fact, Easter or Holy Week is celebrated throughout all of Spain. But Andalucía is where the Easter festivals and events are arranged with the greatest passion and devotion. Granada is together with Seville and Malaga, where the Passion, Crucifixion and Glory of Christ are remembered by the Spanish people with heartbreaking passion and even tears.
Religious Easter Celebrations on the Costa del Sol
The Spanish Holy Week is celebrated in all major cities along the Costa del Sol. You can watch the processions in Marbella, San Pedro Alcantara or Estepona, starting in the afternoon on Palm Sunday to continue in the evening and night from Easter Monday until Good Friday.
The last procession is on Resurrection Sunday in the daytime. The locals live with great devotion to the Holy Week processions during a few intense days, with the Passion of Christ represented in the streets. An experience intensified by the scent of springtime orange blossom, incense and melted wax of the candles.
Easter: Holy Week in Málaga
Declared to be of International Tourist Interest on 16 February 1980, Holy Week in Malaga is an important religious, social and cultural event held every year in the city. The processions take place from Palm Sunday to Good Friday and on Easter Sunday, when the Resurrected Jesus is accompanied by a representation of all the guilds.
Easter in Seville
Unquestionably, Holy Week is Seville’s grand fiesta, unique in its aesthetic and spiritual intensity. In the days between Palm Sunday and Easter Sunday, nearly 60 brotherhoods take to the streets to re-enact the Passion of Christ. One of the salient features in Seville’s Holy Week is the involvement of the citizens themselves, and their respect for the brotherhoods.
Easter in Granada
The Historical Alhambra Moorish palace in the background and the very close high peaks of Sierra Nevada makes Easter and Holy Week in Granada a unique experience. Especially as Granada celebrates the holy week with deep religious devotion.
Nowadays, thirty-two fraternities take out on the streets of Granada the best sculptures of the Spanish and Andalusian art of images. All these sculptures represent all the scenes of the suffering of Jesus and his mother. The sight is a fundamental element to enjoy the scenery and details because of the complicated way through the narrow streets of Granada and the Albaicin, declared a World Heritage Site.
